We all love a good foamy lather, don’t we? Shampoos, hand-washes, and body-washes feel thick, creamy, and foam up a mountain and we feel that we have thoroughly cleansed ourselves. Maybe that’s why you don’t prefer sulphate free shampoos too?
The more a product lathers, the more effective it is, is a lie that has been perpetuated since a long time!
This feel-good factor come at what cost to our health and safety?
Have you ever noticed that the natural & sulphate free personal care products don’t foam as much as the chemical-laden ones and wondered why? Well, the truth lies in the chemicals used.
The cleaning action of any product is from a group of compounds called surfactants. These surfactants ”lift” the dirt from the hair, body etc. The natural resources like vegetable oils or petroleum products are great sources of these surfactants.
Surfactants produced from plant-based sources are non-toxic, biodegradable, and yet very effective. But, they do not lather or foam as much as their petroleum-based counterparts called the Sulphates.
Sulphates are foaming agents that are found most commonly in products like shampoos, toothpaste, hand-washes, and body -washes. Most common are Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), Ammonium Lauryl Sulphate(ALS), Sodium Laureth Sulphate(SLeS) and Ammonium Laureth Sulphate(ALeS).
Five ways in which Sulphates can harm your hair
- Irritate the skin and cause dryness and an itchy scalp
- Cause hair thinning and hair loss
- Absorbed by the skin and are not eliminated completely causing “chemical buildup” in the body which is potentially toxic
- Make the hair frizzy, dry, brittle and prone to breakage
- Leach color from treated hair since they open up the hair cuticles
Incidentally, they are also non-biodegradable and hence cause environmental pollution.
Sulphates are in fact so strong that they are also used in household cleaners, engine degreasers, etc! The other culprits are Cocamide DEA, MEA, and TEA. They are added to make the shampoo thick and creamy. They are potentially toxic to humans as per some studies.
Our scalp and forehead skin has an absorption rate that is three times faster than the skin on the rest of our body. Hence, even if rinsed immediately, some amount of chemicals in the shampoos are still absorbed and enter the bloodstream.
So what is in our shampoos and other personal products is a question worth asking!
Personal care products need to be completely sulphate free shampoos, phthalates, parabens, mineral oil and synthetic dyes to name a few and should be derived from plant-based sources ideally.
A Sulphate free shampoo is actually a blessing. It means they have none of the above-mentioned toxic compounds but gentle and mild ingredients that clean as effectively if not better.
They clean without irritating the scalp and damaging the hair. Being gentle cleansers, they also don’t cause frizziness or breakage. Suitable for all hair types and mild enough to be used on babies, they are in fact loaded with the goodness of natural ingredients. Sulphate-free shampoos can revive, protect, and nourish hair back to life while being environmentally friendly too. Break the myth and do what is good for you and the planet.
